Peackbass fishing

PEACOCK BASS FISHING TRIP

POPULAR NAME: Tucunaré.

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Cichla spp – CICHLIDAE.

DESCRIPTION: The Tucunaré fishermen who frequently come to Amazon rivers have identified at least 8 different species, according to their colorful shapes and also to their size, as the Tucunaré-Açú, Tucunaré-Paca, Tucunaré-Pitanga, Tucunaré Pretinho, Tucunaré Vermelho, Tucunaré Azul, Tucunaré Amarelinho, and a variety with 6-black vertical bars which is found at Araguaia River (Central Region of Brazil).
Nowadays this species has been introduced in other parts of the world such as Venezuela, Panama and The United States (Florida and Hawaii). These fish easily reach around 1,20m long and 12 kg (the Tucunaré-Açú, for instance).

OTHER SPECIES: At the present, there are four species identified as native species from the Amazon Rivers: Cichla Ocelaris, Cichla Temensis, Cichla Orinocensis and Cichla Monóculos.

HABITAT AND BEHAVIOR: They preferably inhabit marginal lagoons during the low water and the igapós (flooded jungle) during the high water. When the weather is too hot they go the middle of the lakes, a region which is many times used by the Piranhas. On rivers where lagoons or lake can be found, the Tucunarés protect themselves from the running water behind obstacles like wood, stones, roots, etc. This species doesn’t like running water.

FISHING EQUIPMENT: For the Tucunaré fishing its most used medium-heavy action spinning-rods with 17, 20, 25, or 30 lb wires. The use a starter with a 0,60 a 0,70mm wire is recommended to avoid you lose the fish among roots, stones or other obstacles under the water. The Tucunaré is also a great opponent on fly fishing, where the best tinder’s are the streamers and poppers, which require more expertness from the fisherman due the most flexibility of the set which has to be from 6 to 10, depending on how big is the fish.

INFORMATION: The Tucunaré will be elected the symbol of sportive fishing in Brazil. Indians and the caboclos of used to fishing the Tucunaré using artificial tenders before this kind of fishing has been diffused in other parts of Brazil. Tied on a fine wire, a tinder’s made of red feathers is dragged by a canoe or long rod with a wire of a around 1,5m which is passed on the water surface. This kind of fishing is known as “Pinda-Siririca”. Despite of natural tenders are not so used, the results are great. As tinder’s you can also use quite small alive fish tied to a set wire with a small buoy, which will thrower to the borders, near to branches of trees in the water, roots, or stones.

THE TASTE FROM THE WATER: Among more than 2000 species of fish found in the Amazon rivers, the Amazonians, which are exacting people concerning to fish, consider a few more than a score of them as being really delicious, or favorite ones for cooking. These favorite ones are those elected by native, tourists, and gastronomes. The more famous among these species is the Pirarucu fish, which is considered the Amazon cod fish, and is largely commercialized (fresh or dry with salt). This fish is used to make the delicious Pirarucu de Casaca, and many dishes. The Pirarucu fish is sometimes 2 meters long or more, depending on its age. Another delicious fish is the Tambaqui. This fish basically eats fruits that fall from the plants and trees in the water, reaches until 15kg. It can be grilled on red-hot coal, and spiced with salt or other spice your imagination asks for. A famous dish made with the Tambaqui is the caldeiradas (a fish soup), which the favorite from local people. Two species in the Amazon are more than delicious when served with sauce: the Tucunaré and the Pescada. Their fleshes are tender, what makes them more suitable for Brazilian, European, or other kinds of sauce. You’ll easily find these species on fine, or popular restaurants. A lot of other species such as Pacú, Sardinha, Acará-açú, Curimatá, Matrinchã, Surubim, and the Acari-bodó (the Amazon cat-fish), are served at local restaurants, the cheapest one and also the most popular is the Jaraqui fish. The list of fish you’ll find in the Amazon is still increasing because there’s a lot of species to be catalogued. But if you asked about how to prepare them, we can say that your imagination is the limit. So let’s go working, and good appetite!

QUEM COME JARAQUI NÃO SAI MAIS DAQUI: It’s a popular saying that means: Who eats the Jaraqui will never leave us, or will never forget its taste. But this expression can vary in other parts of Brazil. It’s obvious that the greater number of tourists stays here only for the excursion time, eating the Jaraqui or not. But those Amazonian leaving in other parts of Brazil or another countries, sometimes miss the pleasure of eating the Jaraqui fish, so the solution is asking for someone in the Amazonas State to send them some frozen Jaraqui, in a thermal container, besides, of course a few manioc flour to complete the taste. A very good place to have this delicious fish (fried or in a fish soup) is the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market, or the others in downtown. “And then will say: If you haven’t had the Jaraqui, you’ve never been here”.
Our staff makes fishing at Uatumã River, on comfortable motorized canoes, giving the best conditions for navigation on the rivers of Amazon, obeying all the legal requirements for this activity which are made by the Federal Government.
